Afro juju music creator and one of Nigeria’s greatest musicians, Sir Shina Peters, has ‘relocated’ temporarily to the United States of America. SSP, like he is fondly called, jetted out months back to be beside his darling wife, Sammie, who is down with cancer, cancelling some shows and forgoing many other things. We gathered that Mrs. Peters’ terminal illness didn’t just start.
As a matter of fact, we were told that it was diagnosed about 3 years ago by Dr. Abayomi Finnih of Finnih Hospital, in Ikeja, Lagos. And that since then, they’ve been managing it until recently when it got out of hand, forcing the woman, a mother of one (Clinton), to go abroad in search of better medical attention.
Sir Shina Peters, no doubt, loves the woman who runs a school in the Fagba area of Lagos, so much. Beside composing a masterpiece of a song for her (Omo nbo), he’s never tired of eulogizing her, both privately and publicly. The music star who is a known womanizer with children from different women once told us that inspite of that, the woman never made the home uncomfortable for him.
The very, very emotional but soulful song which was part of his monster hit debut album, Ace, according to him then, was inspired by the woman’s long wait for a baby of her own. Which she eventually got after over a decade.
We visited his palatial home on Shina Peters Street, in Iju, Lagos on Saturday, January 17, 2015. There was no one around, except his gateman. The young man who identified himself as Tope Williams confirmed that indeed his boss was not in town. Said he: “I am the only one around.
Do you have any message for him?” When we replied in the affirmative, he let us into the compound and offered us a note to leave a message for his boss who fondly addresses his wife as Ayo mi (my joy). Continuing, he said: “We were expecting him to be back on Friday, January 16, 2015, but since we didn’t see him, that means he would be staying till the end of the month. You know madam travelled out, so he has gone to stay with her.
But hopefully, he would be back by month end”. We equally spoke to one of his neighbours, who sells provisions opposite his house. The woman who simply gave her name as Mama Chioma said: “I also noticed that none of his cars has been coming out of the house in the past few days. I don’t know if the wife is sick or not, but I’m very sure, Shina Peters has not been around for quite sometime now”.
